The desire to continue the training work begun in 2021 led the technicians who had worked on the restorations of Jocelyne Saab’s films to be asked to give a ten-day workshop in Beirut, on the premises of the Institut d’Etudes Scéniques et Audiovisuelles (IESAV) of the Université Saint-Joseph, the Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (University of Balamand) and the Coopérative des métiers du cinéma.
Workshop participants had the opportunity to work on image restoration on 3 of the 5 films made in 16mm by Jocelyne Saab in Egypt from the mid-1980s; sound restoration on Tahar Hannach’s Le Plongeur du désert (1952, collection of the Archives numériques du cinéma algérien); color grading on a 4K scan produced by the Association Jocelyne Saab of a circulating positive print of Mohamad Salman’s Badawiya fi Baris (collection of Nadi Likol Nas).
The training was accompanied by a series of activities designed to map the initiatives undertaken to safeguard film archives in Lebanon.
We were welcomed by Nadi Likol Nas, the Arab Image Foundation and Abouddi Abou Jaoudé, who showed us his poster collection,
Nathalie Rosa-Bucher also organized a ciné-balade, a tour of Tripoli’s old cinemas.
