Over the course of 4 days, we practiced the gestures of film editing, using an archive of rushes shot in 16mm by Jocelyne Saab for her film Les Almées, danseuses orientales (1989). Together, we’ll experiment with the plastic possibilities of taking the filmmaker’s images into our own hands. After being introduced to Saab’s work by Mathilde Rouxel, we immerse ourselves in boxes of rushes, which become a territory for experimentation and creation: (re)editing sequences, intervening on film by adding color or removing material, and peeling images. This hands-on workshop is designed both to question the forms of editing and to discover other plastic approaches to images, while enhancing and reinterpreting the filmmaker’s work. During this research, we’ll be using a variety of cinema machines: editing table, viewer, splicer, 16mm projector…
The workshop was followed by a screening of the montages produced during the workshop, as well as films by Jocelyne Saab presented by film historian Mathilde Rouxel and presentation of Le Livre pour sortir au jour de Jocelyne Saab Collection Cinéma hors capital(e) n°8, éditions commune (2023).
The results of these workshops were digitized by Peliskan (Brussels).

Talitha is an association based in Rennes, France, dedicated to thinking about, sharing and reactivating little-considered images, sounds, knowledge, techniques and stories, through residencies, creations, workshops, screenings, editions and restorations based on Acousmatics, Film and Film Archives. Talitha campaigns for popular education based on the sharing and transmission of “disappearing” knowledge and techniques, in particular those linked to the silver and analog chain (film, tapes, etc.), and to books.
