The Jocelyne Saab Association and the Cinematheque Beirut project led by
Association Metropolis Cinema organized a workshop at the Polygone étoilé – a local international cinema of the Film Flamme Association in Marseille, a training workshop in digital film restoration.
restoration. The workshop was held from August 24 to 28, 2021, and will be conducted in English. The training was carried out directly on 2K scans of Jocelyne Saab’s 16mm films, made during the workshop on Polygone étoilé’s MWA scanner.

The workshop was held in partnership with the technical commission of the International Federation of Film Archives (FIAF) and the Swiss Film Archive. It was led by Robert Byrne and Julie Le Gonidec.

The workshop was organized for Lebanese technicians from two partner companies
companies: ThePostOffice and Haroun Studios, both based in Beirut. It was designed to
the restoration of the first 14 documentary films by Franco-Lebanese filmmaker
Jocelyne Saab, and was made possible thanks to the support of the Roberto Cimetta Fund.

The trainers

Robert Byrne (FIAF)
Robert Byrne is a film restorer specializing in early cinema and films from the silent era. He holds an MA in Moving Image Preservation and Presentation from the University of Amsterdam, is a graduate of FIAF’s Film Restoration Summer School and in 2011 was awarded the Haghefilm Foundation Fellowship. To date, Rob has directed the restorations of over twenty silent-era feature films and numerous shorts. Rob has regularly published articles in the FIAF Journal of Film Preservation and AMIA’s The Moving Image, as well as in countless film festival catalogs. He is also Chairman of the Board of the San Francisco Silent Film Festival.

Julie Le Gonidec (Swiss Film Archive)
Julie Le Gonidec works in the digital production department of the Swiss Film Archive. She is responsible for digitizing film, image and sound, digitizing video tapes in all formats, and encoding and transcoding files. She edits and calibrates image and sound sequences, and works on the digital restoration of images. She is also in charge of writing cataloguing reports and carrying out quality control of the work carried out.
